In 2017, the Switzerland County Commissioners were approached by multiple residents regarding the growing substance abuse problem in the county. In response, the Commissioners, with assistance from the Community Foundation of Switzerland County, began hosting a series of monthly community meetings in June of 2017.
At the first meeting, over 100 concerned citizens showed up to discuss the issues surrounding substance abuse. After meeting for a few months, three committees were formed: Prevention, Treatment and Enforcement. These individual committees started meeting to discuss the issues they needed to address, research the resources that were already available and search for new programs that might benefit Switzerland County.
Currently, Drug Free Switzerland County meets monthly on the second Tuesday of each month at Noon to plan events, organize educational opportunities for the community and share information and resources amongst those attending the meetings. Everyone is invited to attend these meetings and get involved.
In July of 2019, this website was launched as a project of Drug Free Switzerland County.
